Verizon Reads Grant in Action

WVPT provided the opportunity for a Verizon Reads grant application in which schools would partner with learning buddy teams. Wenonah Elementary in Waynesboro, Linville Edom Elementary in Rockingham and Keister Elementary in Harrisonburg are recipients of the grant, WVPT Learning Buddies Initiative. Bly Brown from WVPT provided recipient teachers with resources and training to execute the program. Older buddies and younger buddies are reading books together provided by the grant, viewing episodes of the Martha Speaks vocabulary program from PBS and doing activities together to complete a PBS Learning Triangle: View, Read, Do weekly during the month of May.

Opportunity for ITV Video Collection

While at this writing the state budget is still not approved, it is obvious that WVPT’s  Education Services will either be dissolved or altered in size and services for the 2012-13 school year. Given this fact, the Regional Schools Contracting and Planning Committee (RSCPC) has authorized another ITV broadcast starting May 14. This broadcast is an opportunity for schools to record programming they may need for next year or to upgrade programs now on VHS tape to DVD. Educators with requests for programs to be aired may send them to Marian McCarron at mmccarron@wvpt.net Each request will be reviewed and if we have sufficient rights to the program it will be included in the schedule. Click here to view the program schedule.

Families Enjoy Minerals and Sid
Families joined Cubby the WVPT Bear, the JMU Geology Club and WVPT staff to tour the JMU Mineral Museum, examine minerals through interactive displays, hear a mineral story, create a pet rock and watch a Sid the Science Kid episode on rocks for Earth Day.
