Check Out Cubby's Book

WVPT proudly announces the creation of the first children’s book featuring Cubby, the WVPT Bear, titled Join Cubby, the WVPT Bear, At the TV Station.

WVPT Education Specialists Bly Brown and Kathryn Staton created the book, which is intended for children ages 4 to 8.

“We’ve been talking for years about putting a book together,” said Brown, who authored the book. “Since children love Cubby so much, we thought it would be great to provide a book that kids could look through whenever they wanted.”

New Milage Rate for Volunteers

This was just released from the Virginia Office on Volunteerism & Community Service for all volunteers and organizations. The Internal Revenue Service has issued the 2011 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes. Beginning on January 1, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be 51 cents per mile for business miles driven, 19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, and 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

ESL Classes at JMU

JMU's Career Development Academy offers ESL classes for area adults.Registration is March 12-13 from 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00pm. Immigrants from around the world are studying American culture and English at all levels with professional teachers at morning, noon, and night. Visit Memorial Hall in Harrisonburg on West Grace Street room 7350 to register.

Shenandoah National Park Celebrates 75 Years!
The Shenandoah National Park is joining two other U.S. national parks celebrating their 75th Anniversary as one of the nation and regions most treasured places. With nine counties actually bordering the park, other surrounding counties have joined in to commemorate the park and raise awareness to the public in order to celebrate the area’s pride in the park and region. The 75th Anniversary Committee will be planning events and activities throughout 2011 in honor of the celebration including the rededication of the park by Franklin D. Sesame Street Workshop has created several tool kits for families. These DVDs discuss with children issue facing families today! When Families Grieve and Families Stand Together are two workshops that WVPT offers to churches and counselors in our area.
