Copyright Information

Instructional television programming is designed for classroom use, and thus comes with extended rights for use by K-12 teachers. Many teachers also find PBS childrens programs that they wish to use in the classroom. These programs have DIFFERENT rights for use.

ITV series are purchased primarily with state dollars, and thus extended rights for classroom use have typically been acquired. PBS series, such as well-known daytime childrens programs, have a different type of off-air record rights. For information on these rights, see PBS TeacherSource.

ITV Series Rights
Extended re-record rights have been acquired for most ITV series broadcast by WVPT. These extended rights include:

  1. The right for school personnel or volunteers to record the series at school or at home for use in the school during the contract period. (The series contract is usually renegotiated annually.)
  2. The right for media centers to record and circulate the series to schools in their school division.
  3. The right for school or division media centers to playback the series, upon teacher request, through a designated school-access cable channel.

No Tape to Tape copies allowed!
Many ITV series distributors no longer allow the making of tape to tape copies, at least partly due to the decrease in video quality. Therefore, the simplest policy for educators to follow would be to make off-air recordings, only.
