Diffusion No Elusion

Topic: Cell membrane, diffusion, polarity of water. This lesson focuses on the properties of the cell membrane that make the process of diffusion possible. The polarity of water and the phospholipid bilayer enable particles to diffuse across the plasma membrane of the cell. Students access information and gain a better understanding of the cell membrane and diffusion using videostreamed clips, the edtech website, and a lab report on diffusion, Identification of Polysaccharides and Movement of Molecules. Topic: Science, Structural and Behavioral Adaptations
In this lesson the students will be engaged in learning about structural and behavioral adaptations in living things. Students listen to video clips and complete an interactive notepage. Students investigate beak types through a laboratory experiment. Students research and create a podcast on a specific animal’s structural and/or behavioral adaptations. With the use of an interactive white board, the Internet, iPods with recording device, Garageband software, PowerPoint slideshows, and video, the students will identify and differentiate between structural and behavioral adaptations. Powerful PSAs

Topic: The writing process, persuasive writing, writing for an audience. This lesson will introduce students to the public service announcement as a form of wriiten expression. They will also learn a brief history of the Ad Council through an introductory presentation. Students will analyze examples of video and radio PSAs and identify advertising techniques. Students will work in small groups to plan, write and produce a 30 second video or radio PSA.

Progressive Movement, The

Topic: The Gilded Age, The Progressive Movement, labor unions, child labor, sweatshops, corruption, democracy. Students will have prepared for this lesson by learning the background of the westward movement and immigration. They will then view slides of the Triangle Waist Factory fire and discuss the images that they see leading into the Urban Transformation clip of the video, The Industrial Revolution. Exposure to these slides and videos will provide students with the knowledge necessary to allow them to put themselves in the roles of poor immigrants struggling to survive in the economy and conditions of the early 1900’s. Students will need to know where they start and where they want to be, then using their knowledge of the era, plan how to move out of poverty and into middle class.

Topic: Diversity/Civics. This lesson allows students to explore the similarities and differences they share with their classmates. Students are encouraged to recognize the uniqueness of their individuality and explore inner traits that make them special. This lesson incorporates the use of the SmartBoard, multimedia projector, UnitedStreaming video segments, websites and computers for students to access.
